Project/assignment 5: A hydrothermal vent is a fissure in the earth's surface from which geothermal water is released. Hydrothermal vents are commonly found near volcanically active places, areas where tectonic plates are moving apart, ocean basins, and hotspots. They occur because the earth is both geologically active, and has large amounts of water on its surface. Marine biology is usually more active around these hydrothermal vents. Some examples of organisms that live there are giant tube worms, clams , and shrimp.
