Hello, my name is Steven Milisits. I am currently taking oceanography at Northampton High School. I took this class because i thought it would be very interesting to learn about all the cool things in the oceans.
Project/Assignment 7: Whales: This is a blue whale. It is a baleen whale. At 110 feet in length, it is believed to be the largest animal to ever exist.
Project/Assignment 6:Mapping and unknown sea floor
During this assignment we simulated sound echoing on an unkown sea floor.
Project/assignment 5: A hydrothermal vent is a fissure in the earth's surface from which geothermal water is released. Hydrothermal vents are commonly found near volcanically active places, areas where tectonic plates are moving apart, ocean basins, and hotspots. They occur because the earth is both geologically active, and has large amounts of water on its surface. Marine biology is usually more active around these hydrothermal vents. Some examples of organisms that live there are giant tube worms, clams , and shrimp.
Project/Assignment 4: Tectonic Plates on google earth
Project/Assignment 1: Water Salinity Lab
During this lab, we mixed water of different colors with different amounts of salt and added them to each other. The main point of the assignment was to see how water with different salinities react to each other. Throughout the lab what i learned is water with a higher salinity is more dense, which makes it sink to the bottom. If you add less dense water to water that is more dense, the less dense water will stay on top. The food coloring in the water allowed us to analyze the different layers of the ocean, and why they form.
